Nilandhoo preserves a rare timeline — pre‑Islamic archaeology and early Islamic heritage.
12th century • Coral stone mosque
Believed to have been built by Sultan Mohammed bin Abdullah (the first Muslim Sultan) in the 12th century. It is often described as the second oldest mosque in the Maldives, built using coral stones from an earlier Buddhist monastery, with an ancient gateway, wells, and a cemetery with finely carved tombstones.
Pre‑Islamic ruins • Buddhist stupa/temple site
Archaeological ruins believed to be an ancient Buddhist stupa or temple. Excavations have reported stone carvings and artifacts including Chinese celadon stoneware (10th century) and earthenware linked to India and Sri Lanka.
Fishing • Handicrafts • Songs & dances
Nilandhoo’s community stays connected to tradition through fishing practices, local crafts, and cultural performances — and the atoll is historically known for skilled artisanship, including goldsmithing.
